Seneca Indian Nation to Open Temporary Casino

The Seneca Indian Nation made known its plans to build a temporary casino, a 5,000 square foot complex that will be housing 100 slot machines in Buffalo, following a glitch in talks with the city over the original plan of a larger facility.

Barry Snyder, the tribe's president said that the small casino would be built within a year to meet the terms of the Seneca tribe's 2002 agreement with the state to open three western New York casinos.

Plans for the permanent casino will go back to planning after the negotiations between the tribe and the city faced a stumbling block over the sale of a two-block parcel of land in the city road that splits the casino site.

The Seneca casino cannot move forward with the project without acquiring the road.

"Unfortunately, this alternative design plan will not create the magnitude of economic benefits - in terms of jobs and new revenue - which our grand design would have," Snyder said.

Mayor Byron Brown said that he would no longer consider selling the street to the tribe because the Senecas would not agree to make certain written promises. The mayor wanted assurances from the tribe that half of the expected 1,000 casino jobs would be awarded to Buffalo residents.

The city also wanted guarantees that the tribe would not add to its sovereign territory by purchasing additional land. The Senecas currently operate casinos in Niagara Falls and Salamanca.
