Southport Faces Uphill Climb for Casino License

It emerged that Southport is lagging behind in the race to bag a license for a new casino in the area that would be housing up to 80 slot machines.

The application of the town to open a "small" casino that would only offer a modest 4,000 UK Pounds jackpot, was ranked only 22nd most impressive a list of applications that include last month's shortlist.

The government will only be awarding eight licenses in the "small" casino category, meaning that Southport will be facing an uphill battle if it would like to be included in the final eight. A decision on the casinos will be made in December.

A spokeswoman for the Casino Advisory Board however instead that there was still enough time for the locations with struggling bids to improve on their ranking.

"This data is not a prediction for what will happen in December," she said. "We will be asking the short listed authorities again about the strengths and weaknesses of their proposals."

The panel announced that Southport made it to the shortlist for the casino license, bumping out St. Helen's and Chester out of the race. Now the panel has revealed how each casino application was ranked based on eight different criteria, each of which had a highest possible score of 10 points.
